Our Water-Based Spray Painting Process

We strictly follow these steps while spraying:

1

Inspection & Suitability Check

We assess the substrate (MDF, timber, previously painted surfaces, metal, laminate) and confirm whether waterborne systems are appropriate.

2

Masking

Our first step is to create a controlled spray zone. Ceilings, floors, and sockets are fully masked to prevent overspray and protect surrounding surfaces.

3

Woodwork & Doors Preparation

We sand all doors and woodwork to create a mechanical key. Defects are filled, and caulk is applied to gaps along skirting boards and architraves. Handles & hinges are removed when needed.

4

Primer Application

After surface preparation, Intercoat Aqualine Water-Based White Primer is applied before the application of the main coat.

5

Main Coat Application

The surface is then topped with Intercoat’s water-based AQ100 enamel with a 30% finish, providing a durable, smooth result.

6

Drying & Masking

Once the woodwork and doors have fully cured, we then carefully mask all finished surfaces.

7

Walls & Ceilings Preparation

Walls and ceilings are properly sanded to create a mechanical key and for the best possible adhesion of topcoat Crown Trade Clean Extreme Stain Resistant Matt. Defects are filled and caulked where required.

8

Degreasing & Surface Cleaning

Surfaces are cleaned with damp rags to remove remaining dust and contaminants. Any remaining residue can cause adhesion failure.

9

First Coat Application

We then apply the first mist coat, a light priming layer. It helps us to identify any reactions or defects.

10

Main Coat Application

All surfaces are again lightly sanded before the application of the main coat.

11

Curing & Ventilation

Even though surfaces become touch dry within hours, full cure takes longer. Proper airflow is maintained during and after spraying.

12

De-Masking

After curing, we carefully remove all masking materials and clear any waste from the site. We ensure that the spray zone is left clean and organised.

We also do specialized waterborne industrial coatings for industrial & regulated spaces.

Paint & Material Specification

As a low VOC spray painting company, we use professional-grade waterborne acrylic and hybrid systems designed for spray application.

In water-based spray painting:

  • Odour levels are lower.
  • Vapour concentration is reduced.
  • Reoccupation times are often shorter.

Drying Time & Reoccupation

Usual drying time:

  • Touch dry: 1-3 hours (depends on temperature)
  • Recoat window: usually 2-4 hours
  • Light handling: same day in many cases
  • Full cure: several days

We explain expected timelines clearly before work begins.

Water-Based vs Solvent-Based Spraying

Water-based coatings Solvent-based coatings
Lower VOC emissions Stronger odour during curing
Reduced odour Often, higher chemical resistance
Faster reoccupation in many cases Suitable for high-exposure exterior work
Suitable for most interior joinery The correct system depends on the environment and wear expectations.

Indoor Spray Painting Health Risks

All spray painting creates airborne particles during application.

Water-based systems reduce vapour levels, helping minimise common indoor spray painting health risks such as strong lingering fumes.

We still implement:

  • Full masking and containment
  • Controlled ventilation
  • PPE during application
  • Clear guidance on safe re-entry times

Cost Guide

Costs vary depending on:

  • Surface area
  • Number of components
  • Primer requirements
  • Masking complexity
  • Accessibility
  • Ventilation setup

For a typical water based spray painting house project involving internal doors or fitted units, pricing is affected more by preparation time than paint cost.
